Hey everyone. This post is me ranting on how much I hate the fact that age is supposedly a good excuse for dismissing teen problems. Maybe you will agree with some of my points, maybe you won’t.
The amount of respect I lose for one for using age as an excuse, insult, or stereotype, is unreal. I truly hope that people that say or mean these things will eventually realize how biased, ignorant, rude, and close-minded they sound. Where did this idea of a child being suicidal become a joke or easily dismissed? Anyone at any age can suffer from a mental disorder.
Maturity is gained by the things life hands you and by what you chose to learn from it and other things. Experience. Age is a number and does not determine one’s understanding of things. It is solely the individual. Age does not define who you are as a person. Too young, too old, whatever it is- it does not define one’s personality, understanding, etc.
Because young people can experience pain as much as anyone else. Young people are sometimes raped, beaten, abused, bullied, made out to be failures, constantly mocked, or put down. Teens can have a mental disorder or a disability, and struggle beyond belief. Teenagers do know what pain is. They are invalidated or made out to be jokes when those things happen.
People use, “well, I was a teenager once, and…” as an excuse, and claim they suddenly understand all teenagers and that they’re all the same way, or the way they personally once were when really that isn’t the case at all. There’s no certain way a certain age group acts, there’s only a certain way that individuals act. There’s a difference in the way people behave, but it isn’t based on age, it’s based on the person’s personality, interests, habits, etc.
When a young person is in a fight, people claim “it only matters who ends it..” But, in the adult world, oh they’re all for who started it! So sorry to tell you, but the whole fucking reason we’re here right now is to learn how to function in the real world once high school is behind us, so stop treating us like little kids with your damn double standards, cause that’s not how life works.
